I Survived Harry Potter
Well, Friday night has come and gone and I'm still ticking. I worked 5pm Friday until nearly 2am Saturday for the release of the final Harry Potter book. It was crazy. People were screaming as the time grew near and when we started opening the boxes stacked at each register, the excitement was like nothing I've ever seen - especially for a book: high school girls actually jumping up and down as I put the book in their hands, kids opening the book almost as soon as they'd paid for it.... The energy of the night kept us going, but once everyone was gone and we had to clean up, we got tired real quick.
After I dropped off a co-worker, I got home around 2:15am and immediately started reading. I ended up reading until 6am. I then got up at noon and aside from a shower and a quick trip for some dinner, I read straight through until almost 10:45 that night and finished the book. I won't say what happened, but I wouldn't have wanted it to end any other way.
This week I'm finishing up a paper on interdependent origination (aka dependent arising) for my summer independent study. I also just registered for classes today. I'll be taking a course on the Prajnaparamita tradition, the Chinese Dunhuang Cave texts, and an independent study in Korean language facilitated by a Korean nun who is a classmate/friend of mine here.
Speaking of Korean language, my Dharma Master just returned from South Korea. It looks like I'll be staying at one of two fairly large temples ultimately under the direction of my "No Sunim": that is, my Dharma Master's Dharma Master. One is called Guryong-sa (Nine Dragon's Temple) and the other is called Yeorae-sa (Tathagatha Temple). My No Sunim is the new abbot of Tongdo-sa, one of the three or four largest temples in Korea in the Jogye order. Guryong-sa and Yeorae-sa are branches of Tongdo-sa. It's now less than a year (10 1/2 months, but who's counting?) until I move to Korea. For now, I have to focus on saving as much as possible and on finishing my degree.
1) Glad to hear you survived the Potter Party. I was on the other side of the register, so to speak, and *I* found it exhausting, so I can really feel for ya.
2) Good book, wasn't it?
3) I am so totally stoked for you re: your Korean studies news. Congrats!
